Deborah J. Barrett, Ph.D., is Professor of the Practice of Professional Communication at Rice University in Houston, Texas, U.S.A. Deborah’s leadership approach to communication has developed over her years of teaching, but has also been influenced by working for McKinsey & Company, a leading management-consulting firm, and Hill & Knowlton, a global public relations company. Working with corporate and community leaders, Deborah has experienced first-hand the essential communication abilities leaders need to connect to their audiences and make a difference in their organizations and in their communities. Deborah’s book Leadership Communication is a guide for current and future leaders to help them develop the communication capabilities necessary to be transformational leaders.
At Rice University, Deborah is also Director of the Program for Communication Excellence, where she teaches leadership communication, cross-cultural communication, negotiations, consulting, graduate writing and research, and creative nonfiction. In addition, she conducts classes in leadership communication and team dynamics in the Executive MBA program at Jacobs University in Germany and is co-founder and Executive Director of University Connections.
