Nuestro idioma, nuestra herencia: Español para hispanohablantes (PDF) is a Spanish for Heritage Speakers textbook. It has been specially crafted for students in the United States who grew up speaking or hearing Spanish at home or in their community and who, for the most part, are proficient at speaking and understanding Spanish, but need to further develop their writing and reading skills. As such, the ultimate goal of Nuestro idioma, nuestra herencia is to refine students’ Spanish language skills so that they develop the confidence to use them in any context―professional, academic, or personal. Unique in its approach, each of the eight chapters highlights a Hispanic cultural genre and grounds it in relevant countries of focus, such as the music of the Hispanic Caribbean, a Mexican film, and myths, literary traditions, and legends in Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. Through cultural readings and business-oriented readings related to the chapter theme, college students will build upon their reading skills. In addition, Spanish students will sharpen their writing skills by practicing different writing techniques presented in each chapter. Moreover, a review of key grammatical structures and Spanish orthography provide focused opportunities to polish these essential aspects of the language. As students hone their Spanish language skills, they will also develop a deeper sense of pride in their linguistic and cultural heritage.
