Trump, Twitter, and the American Democracy: Political Communication in the Digital Age – eBook PDF
Trump, Twitter, and the American Democracy (PDF) takes a social science approach to address two linked questions: (1) what does Donald Trump say on Twitter? and (2) why? After entering the 2016 Presidential Election, Donald Trump’s tweets have been a major part of his communications strategy with the public. While the popular media has dedicated considerable attention to selected tweets, it is less clear what those certain tweets tell us about Trump the businessman, the political candidate, and, ultimately, the President of the United States. We debate that to fully understand Donald J. Trump, we must take a more inclusive approach to examine all of his activities on Twitter. Generally, our analysis presents an unusually complex picture of Trump and how he uses Twitter. Not only has his pattern of tweets transformed over time, but we also find that President Trump’s use of Twitter is more careful than he has been given credit. Similar to other politicians, Trump is strategically-minded about his attendance on social media.
Review
“Waterman and Ouyang have crafted a fascinating ebook that examines the Twitter-verse of Donald Trump. More importantly, their well-written effort challenges many of our expectations about modern presidential rhetoric studies. They put forward the concept of ‘going directly public’ (GDP) which looks at how a president involves the public and uses media power to shift the political system.” ― Shannon Bow O’Brien, Lecturer, University of Texas, USA
